The first part of the chapter discusses different approaches to the concept of transnationalism and how the concept became popular in the social sciences in the last two decades, by drawing on the work of Nina Glick Schiller, Linda Basch, and Christina Szanton Blanc, Thomas Faist, as well as Ludger Pries, and the work of Alejandro Portes and colleagues-to name but a few.

Transnational processes can be economic, political, or cultural; they can operate at different levels and in a variety of institutional settings, such as countries, cities, neighborhoods, or systems of meaning. Transnationalism is the idea that flows of transstate migrants and their symbolic and material accoutrements are bi- or multidirectional and ongoing. That is, where previous generations of migrants tended toward making a “clean break” with their societies of origin, many contemporary migrants continue to have ongoing ties with the communities from which they migrated. In this review, we offer a short history of theoretical developments, outlining the different ways in which scholars have defined and approached transnational migration. We then summarize what is known about migrant transnationalism in different arenas—economics, politics, … Transnationalism is a contemporary phenomenon that involves migration of people from one country to another, but they retain ties with their home countries.
